During the second year, students begin to focus on a specific field of study. In the Aerospace Engineering program, students have the choice of four options: propulsion, aerospace structures, aerospace control, and space structures. For more information about each of these options, please refer to the pages of this website dedicated to each option.
Aerospace Engineering students will spend the majority of their time in the research laboratories and studios of the industry-focused institution, Qatar University's International Center for Mechanical Engineering Research (ICMER). With ICMER's world-class facilities, students will engage in projects such as:
Spacecraft propulsion development to enable new space technologies.
Benchmarking of solid propellant rocket engines and hybrid-electric aircraft engines.
Development of new propulsion systems.
Design and development of aircraft and spacecraft.
Manufacturing, assembly, and operations of spacecraft.
The Aerospace Engineering program builds a foundation of knowledge and experience that provides students with the capability to address technological challenges and opportunities in any area of the aerospace and defense industry.
Aerospace Engineering students will also have the opportunity to visit the Doha campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during their second year. The MIT campus is located in the Al-Jaber Science City, where MIT students and researchers work with Qatar University faculty and students. The MIT campus is the first to integrate the disciplines of design, engineering, and science to create real-world solutions. Students may use this opportunity to engage with MIT faculty and graduate students in creating novel solutions to complex problems.
In addition, KAUST offers a special one-year graduate program in aerospace engineering that blends coursework with practical experience in aerospace companies. This option is open only to exceptional students.
Graduates in the Aerospace Science and Engineering curriculum pursue graduate study leading to a Ph.D. or M.S. degree. A number of Ph.D. and M.S. programs are available in the Air Force Institute of Technology, and a special agreement allows Air Force Institute of Technology students to continue their education on campus at the US Air Force Institute of Technology and other institutions.
